SINGAPORE (Dow Jones)–U.S. President George W. Bush mourned Milton Friedman Friday, calling the Nobel-Prize winning economist one of America’s greatest citizens.
Friedman, best known for his theory of monetarism, died Thursday at the age of 94.
“Milton Friedman was a revolutionary thinker and extraordinary economist whose work helped advance human dignity and human freedom,” Bush said in a statement.
“A champion of limited government and personal freedom, Friedman proposed bold ideas about school choice, tax reductions, and an all-volunteer army that serve as the foundation of many of America’s most successful government reforms,” Bush said. “His work demonstrated that free markets are the great engines of economic development.”
“America has lost one of its greatest citizens.”
