GAZA CITY (AP)–Hamas’ supreme leader, Khaled Mashaal, sought to quell violent tensions in the Palestinian territories Friday, urging his militant group to “practice restraint” and avoid being “dragged into a civil war.”

A shooting attack on the convoy of Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas Thursday and other factional violence this week have sent tensions inside the Palestinian territories soaring to their highest point in the past decade. Officials from Hamas and the rival Fatah Party of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas have both warned of the threat of civil war.

“I call on our brothers in Hamas to practice restraint…to protect Palestinian blood,” Mashaal said in a live radio interview from his base in the Syrian capital of Damascus. “Our battle is against the (Israeli)-occupation, and we will not be dragged into a civil war.”
