DETROIT (Dow Jones)–Toyota Motor Corp. (GM) debuted the new “CrewMax” full-sized version of its Tundra pickup truck on Sunday, and said the Tundra will be a key sales driver for the auto maker in the U.S. this year.

The four-door CrewMax, headed to dealer lots in March, represents Toyota’s latest effort to compete in a segment that’s still dominated by General Motors Corp. (GM) and Ford Motor Co. (F). Toyota introduced the truck for the first time here at the North American International Auto Show, highlighted its American design and assembly roots and also showed off other versions of the 2007 Tundra.

“Our annual sales goal is 200,000 vehicles, reflecting our confidence in the product,” said Jim Lentz, executive vice president for Toyota Motor Sales, during a press conference.

The sales goal also reflects a “striking change” in who the trucks are designed for – “true truckers”, Lentz said.

The Tundra sales goal would represent a significant jump for Toyota, as 124,500 Tundras were sold in the U.S. in 2006. Ford sold nearly 800,000 F-Series pickups last year, in contrast, and more than 900,000 in each of the two prior years.

Other Tundra versions include the Tundra Regular Cab and Tundra Double Cab, which arrive at dealerships in February. Lentz said the new Tundra is expected to be one of two key sales drivers, along with hybrids, for Toyota this year.

The new Tundra is larger in every dimension than the version it replaces, Toyota noted in a press release, and comes with an optional 381-horsepower, eight-cylinder engine. The optional tow package for the V8-equipped pickups give them up to 10,800 pounds of towing capacity, depending on the model and drivetrain.

Despite their prowess in growing U.S. passenger car sales, Japanese auto makers have found it difficult to penetrate the full-size pickup market. Earlier this decade, Nissan Motor Co. (NSANY) unveiled a completely new Titan pickup that has struggled to meet expectations.

Does The Redesigned Tundra Really Need Incentives

Let the Japanese car maker Toyota answer that. Well, I guess they donít have to. The news that I caught early this morning when I was researching about what a Gibson exhaust is that the car company will be using incentives to sell its retuned Tundra …
