NEW YORK (Dow Jones)–President George W. Bush recently told Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki that his new strategy for Iraq must work “or you’re out,” according to officials attending a briefing Bush gave congressional leaders Wednesday, the New York Times reported Thursday.

“I said to Maliki `this has to work, or you’re out,”‘ said Bush, according to two unidentified officials who attended the meeting at the White House, the newspaper reported. Bush outlined his latest strategy for the war in Iraq later Wednesday, in which he called for an additional 21,500 U.S. troops to be sent to Iraq.

Asked at the White House meeting why he thought the new plan would work, Bush was said to reply, “Because it has to,” the Times reported.

Meanwhile, the newspaper also reported that unidentified Bush aides hinted that the administration already had devised a “Plan B” in the event the latest strategy fails, with one aide saying “there are other ways to achieve our objective.”

But the aide would not describe that strategy, or say if it involved withdrawal, containment or the breakup of the country into sectarian entities, the report said.
