NEW YORK (Dow Jones)–Most Americans, by a 61%-36% margin, oppose a plan put forward late Wednesday by President George W. Bush to send an additional 21,500 troops to Iraq, according to a poll taken following the president’s speech, the Washington Post reported Thursday.

By a narrow majority – 53% – those surveyed said they believe congressional Democrats should attempt to block the Bush plan to send additional troops.

Also, 57% of poll respondents said the U.S. is losing the war in Iraq, according to the Washington Post-ABC News poll. Just three in 10 surveyed felt the planned troop increase would bring an earlier end to the war.
