NEW YORK (Dow Jones)–The U.S. is prepared to reverse its policy and open talks with Iran if it agrees to stop its uranium enrichment program, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Thursday.

Rice, speaking at a press conference in Washington, said the most urgent diplomatic goal of the U.S. in the Middle East is to “empower reformers and responsible people across region and to confront extremists.”

She said Syria and Iran, “have unfortunately chosen to align themselves with the forces of extremism, both in Iraq and across the Middle East.”

Iran, Rice said, should end its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

“If Iran suspends its uranium enrichment… then the United States is prepared to reverse 27 years of policy, and I will meet with my Iranian counterparts any time, anywhere,” Rice said. “Thus, we would have the possibility to discuss every facet of our countries’ relations.”
