OMAHA, Neb. (AP)–U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., has issued a scathing rebuke of President George W. Bush’s new plan for Iraq, even as the president was announcing it to the American people on national television Wednesday night.

In a statement, Hagel called the plan to send more U.S. troops a “dangerously wrongheaded strategy that will drive America deeper into an unwinnable swamp at great cost.”

The criticism could escalate Thursday, when Hagel faces Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in a hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on which Hagel is a senior member.

Hagel said there is no military solution in Iraq.

“Iraqis are the only ones who can stop the sectarian and intersectarian violence that is now consuming their country,” said Hagel, a Vietnam War veteran and potential Republican presidential candidate for 2008.
